2008 - Meal Exchange celebrates its $2 Million Milestone. Since 1993, Meal Exchange programmes have generated 2 million dollars for those in need across Canada, 1.2 million of which was raised in the last 4 years.

Meal Exchange, in partnership with the Ontario Association of Food Banks, launches Esurio- Ontario's academic journal of Hunger & Poverty. 

Meal Exchange with Bishop Strachan School in Toronto produces the first full length adaptation of Portraits of Hunger, 4 Corners, which will be preformed on May 20th & 21st at the Young Centre to raise funds for Meal Exchange and awareness for the 2.5 million Canadians facing hunger.

2007 - Meal Exchange partners with the Children's Emergency Foundation to launch a breakfast program initiative which engages it's youth network raise funds to support breakfast programs in communities across Canada.

In parntership with the Ontario Association of Food Banks, Meal Exchange launches the Ontario-wide lecture series, Food for Thought on campuses across the province.

Meal Exchange partners with Canadian Pacific's Holiday Train programme to raise food and awareness for local food banks in communities across Canada and the U.S.

2006 - Meal Exchange officially launches the Student Food Network, as its first Social Incubator project. The website is launched as well at www.studentfood.ca

Meal Exchange receives a generous grant from the Ontario Trillium Foundation and officially launches the Change-Makers Mentoring Programme for Alumni and Young Professionals.

Meal Exchange launches Portraits of Hunger, a youth-led national theatre project that will feature the stories of hunger in Canada from research and writing by students.
The brain-child of the second annual leadership conference, Portraits of Hunger, is Meal Exchange's second Social Incubator project.

2005 - Meal Exchange works with Artez Interactive to bring Trick or Eat to the next level by launching at an online campaign through www.trickoreat.ca  

Meal Exchange, with the support of the Michael Young Family Foundation, develops the Social Incubator, a commitment to supporting new ideas initiated by youth that address hunger in Canada. 

2004 - With generous support from studentcare.net/works, Meal Exchange forms the Student Food Network, a student-founded, youth-led initiative that connects campus food centres to each other a network of resources. 


2003 - Meal Exchange finds a home in a permanent office space in downtown Toronto, at the innovative 401 Richmond Building 

2001 - Meal Exchange becomes a case study in a university marketing textbook!

University of British Columbia, University of Victoria and Augustana become part of Meal Exchange's national network.

Meal Exchange receives a generous grant from the McConnell Family Foundation.

2000 - Meal Exchange is described as "one of Canada's most innovative non-profit organizations" in a full-page Maclean's article.

Meal Exchange is runner-up for the prestigious Peter F. Drucker Foundation Innovation Award.

Palmer Jarvis/DDB develops a print campaign for Meal Exchange. It is so successful that posters are stolen from campuses to hang in dorm rooms and student houses nation-wide.

1999 - St. Thomas, St. Mary's and Brock University join in.


1998 - Meal Exchange incorporates a registered charitable foundation. Then expands to the University of Windsor.

1997 - Meal Exchange receives its first grant, courtesy of The Ontario Trillium Foundation.

1996 - Rahul and Ryan Saunders write their thesis on creating and managing a non-profit organization, as a guide for Meal Exchange's expansion.

Meal Exchange expands to other universities, University of Guelph is the first one to the table.  Dave Kranenburg becomes the first chapter coordinator

1993 - Seventeen year-old Wilfrid Laurier student, Rahul Raj, ignores a friend's suggestion to buy a lifetime supply of gum to use up his excess meal points. Remembering his grandmother's teachings about the importance of helping those in need, Rahul knew that students could spring into action to make a difference. Meal Exchange was founded and Wilfrid Laurier hosted its first successful food drive, donating hundreds of meals from their plans.
